Bobbers

A Bonshaker built Sportster Bobber

I’m obsessed with motorbikes right now. Particularly retro styled ‘bobbers’ and ‘choppers’.  I’ve always wanted a bike like that since I can remember but I’ve put the idea off until now cos of age / money etc.  I think its about time I had one in my life.  Its been a while since I sold my last 2 projects (1978 1275GT Mini and 1962 VW split Screen Van) and I’ve enjoyed the break from the money pit. However my yearning for engines and tinkering with nuts and bolts is growing again so I’m on the look out.  If you know anyone selling a XS650 (particularly one already hardtailed but I dont mind if not) or a cheap Sportster let me know, I’m struggling to find them.  I’d like a Triumph too but thats probably just dreaming (although let me know on that too!).

I’ve been chatting to Benny over at Boneshaker choppers in Birmingham who’s been a wealth of advice. Check out some of the bikes they build and start drooling. He’s also got a blog with some sick stuff on for inspiration. I will have a bike I will have a bike!

You got good taste in bikes, the nice thing about building bobbers is that you really don’t need a lot of actual “Bike” parts. I have used car parts, tractor parts and built my own “crude parts”. Another thing is to take a design for a part to a shop that doesn’t specialize in bikes. Don’t tell them it is for a custom bike (especially Harley)or it will triple the price. Finally … “One piece at a time” …. start collecting anything that could possibly used on a bike build. Trade … swap … sell … and buy until you get enough parts to put you on the road.

    Good luck

Thanks Jeromy. Good advice. Cant wait to get to some swap meets too and look for some odd bits and pieces. I got the book How to build a Bobber on a Budget from a friend yesterday. Some good simple advice in there too.

Ive been looking at a lot of sportster bobbers lately and the one on the top is probably the most retro/vintage looking bike thats caught my attention. Wondering, if you know how much in parts it would cost to put one together.

How long is a piece of string? If you wanted something exactly the same as that one I’d ask Rouserworks.
