Triumph!

1962 Triumph "Palm Beach"

1962 Triumph "Palm Beach"

I picked up a pretty haggard old Triumph “Palm Beach” 3 speed at the weekend. Stoked. Needed a bike to get around on when its wet (BMX sucks in the rain) and to carry me to and from the pub. Its in need of some TLC to put it mildly but its all there and it all works. The Sturmey Archer gears are so good, smooth and working like new. They don’t build bikes like this anymore.

I bought one of these in 1967 when the breathalyser came in in the UK. Still got it and ride it to the pub. Raleigh made them from 1955 until 1970 approx using the Triumph name which they licenced from the motorbike maker. Rides well and OK for quite long distances. I live in the West Midlands of the UK where there are still bike shops that sell the old size tyres, brake blocks etc for old British iron.

Good stuff Bob! Mine is now in bits in the shed after lending it to a mate who left it out in the rain for ages and the gears started slipping etc. I’ll fix it up one day although its a shame its a bit big for me. I think the frame is a 22in and I’m short so I’d be better off with a 20 or something. Cant let it die though, I’ll probably fix it up and sell it on or sell as is so it doesnt go to waste. Stoked to hear you’ve still got yours. I’m still riding the Raleigh Team Banana I got when I was about 13! (mid 80′s) hah
